Simplify, Specify, Amplify

Each January I take the time to plan and create a theme for my year. I find it helpful to design a vibrant slogan encompassing the vibe I want to establish over the next 12 months. It’s a great tool to easily reconnect with my focus as the year rolls out.

In 2018 I wanted to go paperless and streamline my business. This was super ambitious for a paper lover who has notebooks and papers everywhere. I needed to update my technology, hardware, processes and probably the most challenging of all, my mindset! The excitement around decluttering was running high. With a desire to move forward on this goal, I created the catchphrase,

Simplify, Specify, Amplify ©

My first attempt failed but, hey, I expected that. Change requires letting go of past practices and embracing new skills. I clearly had a lot to learn.

Avatar is a classic movie that I really enjoyed. Have you seen it? There is a scene where the clan spiritual leader, Moat, tells Jake Sully, “It’s hard to fill a cup that is already full”. It’s a profound quote that is applicable to change and the concept of letting go.

Wind forward to 2020. I find the slogan a core principle for my coaching business. It creates a powerful mind-map for activating change whilst still enjoying the journey. When using the three-step process, I find it helpful to think about it in the following way:

Step 1 – SIMPLIFY

Notice and break down the clutter and noise in your busy life. Look for what serves or helps you. Listen to what inspires you. Let go of what binds you and is out of date.

Step 2 – SPECIFY

Be crystal clear on what you want. Determine your outcomes and how you want to achieve them. Write them down. Add colour and clarity to what success looks and feels like for you.

Step 3 – AMPLIFY

Do what you specified. Do it with vigour and do more of it. Chase it with gusto. Get into routines that suit your style. Find your operating groove, an accountability coach and people around you that support your results. Get excited.

When specifying your desired outcomes, it is helpful to use this test question, “Does it put a smile on my face”? Living your best life and implementing practices designed to enjoy the journey, will help amplify momentum and results.

Test the process and see how it works for you. In a COVID-19 world full of the noise of uncertainty, the leadership practice of simplification and focus is liberating.

#1 Rule in Performance – Eat Before You’re Hungry

Last year I supported and cheered my partner in the Three Peaks Cycle Challenge held at Falls Creek, Australia. For those not familiar with the event, it’s a 230 kilometre cycle through spectacular verdant mountain scenery whilst climbing 5000 meters. It is both gruelling and challenging by design. If completed in under ten hours, you get to bring home a fancy ‘achiever’s’ jersey. I’m delighted and proud to share that he finished, met his time target, and brought home the lycra!

The pre-event briefing included the expected important information and logistics. It was also accompanied by an eloquent and heartfelt motivational speech by one of the support crew. His storytelling piqued my interest and its application to corporate leadership.  What really caught my attention were his words,

‘Eat before you’re hungry, drink before you’re thirsty’.

This guy was speaking my language. This totally resonated with me because as a coach, I challenge my clients to do the important things first … and to do them before they become urgent.

Steven Covey popularised the four-quadrant matrix based on a concept created by Dwight Eisenhower, the 34th President of the United States.  Eisenhower said,

‘What is important is seldom urgent and what is urgent is seldom important’.

Both men encouraged leaders to spend ample time in Quadrant two; the important but not urgent quadrant. If you’re interested in shifting your focus, here are four key questions worth asking yourself:

  1. Are you clear on your priorities?
  2. What are your time planning rituals?
  3. Are you aware of which quadrants you are spending your time in?
  4. Are you spending enough time in Quadrant 2 or are you busy with the urgent?

I encourage you to take time each week to STOP, REVIEW, then DECIDE what activities to schedule in your calendar.
